During 2007-2009 I worked on a series of studio based works. This involved using maps and jigsaw fragments as well as toy soldiers and other objects, which were placed together and then photographed. I obtained the maps and jigsaws via ebay. The maps were carefully selected to serve as the back drop for works that centre on nationality, cultural identity, historic and political meaning. Waddington jigsaws produced a series of Maps of countries around the world in the 1960’s, as well as on subjects that were seen as educational in ethos at that time. However in the twenty first century these ideas seem stereotypical and indeed questionable. These works play with the visual attractiveness of the objects as well as engaging the viewer on a number of different levels.
